OPENING ILLUSTRATION–
- Have you ever heard of Drake’s passage before?
- It is what many sailors consider the most dangerous stretch of ocean on the planet, but it is not just known for its turbulent water and blustering gusts of winds, but also because Drake’s passage is where the Atlantic and the Pacific ocean meet.
- You might have seen a picture of this before, where you have these two clearly different colored bodies of water and where they meet there seems to almost be like this invisible boundary that had been fixed in place.
- If you saw it from a helicopter fly over it would seem like these waters just don’t mix, and at first they don’t, but it is due to the sheer force of the immensely strong and opposing currents, above and below the surface, clashing violently against each other, that they do actually mix.
- This is not a trip for the faint hearted sailor, but the unique ocean current is only a part of the difficulty they would have to contend against in these arctic waters. The other is the wind, the temperature difference in these two oceans constantly generates massive gusts of wind that have blown many ships against their will to be dashed against the rocks off of the southern coast of Chile.
- But even despite all of this chaos life not only finds a way but it flourishes. The two different temperatures and salinity levels begin to intermingle with one another only because of the immense turbulence. But because they do mix something unique begins to happen, a chain reaction of life. The waters become rich in both oxygen and nutrients, which lead to an explosion of life.
- Initially it is mainly responsible for the flourishing of the smallest forms of life such as krill. But for this very reason you begin to see the very largest life forms on the planet of humpback and blue whales come to eat the krill and there is much life found in between,
- and in a place where as one would have expected to find no life to be able to survive in such an environment marked by chaos they will actually find life thriving in numbers that set it apart from the rest of creation not in spite of the turbulence but because of it.
- You might have seen a picture of this before, where you have these two clearly different colored bodies of water and where they meet there seems to almost be like this invisible boundary that had been fixed in place.
- It is what many sailors consider the most dangerous stretch of ocean on the planet, but it is not just known for its turbulent water and blustering gusts of winds, but also because Drake’s passage is where the Atlantic and the Pacific ocean meet.
- The reason my mind kept coming back to this unique scene found in Drake’s passage is because If you were to take a helicopter fly over of the ten commandments, being able to see all of them all at once, you would notice how the fourth commandment clearly stands out as almost that demarcation line between commandments 1-3 and 5-10.
- Commands 1-3 is the ocean of how we are to directly interact with God in a way that would be directing our worship to him, while commandments 5-10 is the other ocean filled with how God’s people are to interact with all of man kind, again in a way that brings God all the more glory.
- Jesus summed up all of the law and the prophets in this way love God and love others and the forth command is where those two things converge.
- If it were not for sin entering into our world it would have been just that simple, but instead the world is filled with people who are just as sinful and messed up as we all are. People are messy, and living life with people will always mean that you are either in the midst of chaos or you are about to head back into it.
- Whether we are talking about work or rest, every part of life was put into chaos when sin entered the world.
- How we worship God has everything to do with how it is that we interact others, both as fellow believers and those who are not yet followers of Christ that are being tossed to a fro by the storms in life, both how we work and rest will ultimately lead to not just more fruit of God’s redemptive work in your life but more importantly it will throw a line of hope out to those whose ships can no longer weather the storm and invite them on to the ship called Jesus Christ, where He has prepared a place for them to rest next to him in the bottom of the boat.
- Thank the Lord, we have a God whose presence hovers above the restless water and brings order out of the chaos.
PART ONE QUICK RECAP
- For part one of the fourth commandment we addressed how to worship our God through our work in part 8 of the sermon series,
- which at its core means for us as followers of Christ our main sense of self, our identity that we have has nothing to do with our own efforts, production and performance, but is shaped by the free gift of the gospel of Jesus Christ being rooted in who he is and what he has done.
- So for Christians to worship God through their work means we work not for our freedom, but through faith in Christ we have been set free so we can worship our God in that freedom.
INTRODUCTION–
- Which brings us to today for part 9 in our series, as we seek to dive more into the sabbath portion of the fourth commandment.
- This subject of rest is super important for today, because we live in a day and age where through technology we can so easily slip into escapism through buying what the world is selling to us as rest.
- We can so easily have our time, and even our life, stolen right out from under us if we go the path of least resistance.
- The boundaries that had once existed in our culture that promoted opportunities for healthy rest are no longer the reality that we have in an increasingly technologically infused age.
- I believe as Christians we should be known for how it is we rest in a world that is finding rest increasingly impossible to achieve
- This subject of rest is super important for today, because we live in a day and age where through technology we can so easily slip into escapism through buying what the world is selling to us as rest.
- There is so much in the fourth commandment, and quite frankly it is often a commandment that is very misunderstood.
- Just like work, rest is not an exclusively Christian thing.
- All humans experience the chaos life brings through living out our personal and professional callings.
- Life is messy.
- Wouldn’t it be great if there was some way to find our rest even through the storms that life has to bring?
- Well for the Christian the answer to that problem lies in understanding what is the true meaning of the sabbath. Some of the reason behind the confusion to this command is because of the language we use itself to describe it.
- The word sabbath will always mean rest, but the word rest does not always mean sabbath, and we are going to take some time today to go into some of those distinctions between the different rests, the good, the bad and the sabbath.
- My goal in this message is that you will clearly see how the sabbath specifically, is not a burden or and obligation but a tool that God has given to His worshipers to not merely satisfy the human need for rest but bring life to your worship and that blessing will create more life in countless more lives especially in the turbulent waters of this life.
- Just like work, rest is not an exclusively Christian thing.
- GOOD REST
- In high school I had a football coach that had some great one-liners that have stuck with me through the years, one of them was “fatigue makes cowards of us all”. I have found this to be a very true statement in life,
- but now take that little one-liner to the next logical step, and ask yourself,
- what is it that you turn to for your comfort when you are tired?
- People find comfort in a whole slew of different things, could be watching football, gardening, reading or watching movies.
- As for myself, I love the gym, any bit of free time I have you can find me there pumping the iron, but for someone like Dane, I happen to know he hates the gym and would rather play a four hour long board game called terraforming mars with the colonies expansion pack.
- My point is there is such a diverse appetite for how people enjoy spending their leisure time, but resting is not doing nothing, but it is not necessarily work either.
- Work is where someone spends energy towards something that will be used for the advancement or sustainment of life.
- Where rest on the other hand is energy spent on activities of leisure, or ways to spend time that is not focused on the advancement or sustaining of life. Rest at its best, serves as a restorative activity that allows you to refuel in a way that helps you get back to work with more energy and focus than when you had last left.
- Rest is not something you do once a week, but rest is something that to some extent we do everyday even just by sleeping, and even during work.
- There have been several studies done to show that even a quick 10 minute break every couple of hours leads to overall better productivity and focus.
- but now take that little one-liner to the next logical step, and ask yourself,
- BAD REST
- That is good rest, but there is also bad rest.
- Rest at its worst is rest serves to be a distraction from the storm in life that you are facing.
- It can turn into a coping mechanism of numbing yourself with the aim of distracting yourself from the reality of the winds and the waves that are bearing down on you with a growing intensity.
- This is not to be confused as someone who is using rest as being a helpful tool to create just a little bit of distance between them whatever chaos they are facing in order to be able to come back with a fresh set of eyes.
- Oftentimes this kind of rest will fall under the category of mindlessness, but certainly not exclusively, any of the good and healthy forms of rest can fall under this category of the worst kind of rest.
- When it gets to this point of a numbing escapism I wouldn’t say that actually falls under the category of rest any longer, but just unhealthy coping, but yet this counterfeit of rest is the path of least resistance making it often our default methods of seeking rest that leave you feeling more depleted than when you had first begun.
- There is often zero intentionality associated with it, and in societies like ours that you see life infused with technology with each other, more often than the good form of rest, you will be left with this counterfeit. But even when rest is at its best, rejuvenating, refocusing and restoring rest that launches you into work, it still does not cross the threshold of worship to God. The way to worship your God through your rest is by making a regular practice of the sabbath
- It can turn into a coping mechanism of numbing yourself with the aim of distracting yourself from the reality of the winds and the waves that are bearing down on you with a growing intensity.
Let’s look at the fourth commandment from the deuteronomy passage now
Deuteronomy 5:12–15
[12] “‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. [13] Six days you shall labor and do all your work, [14] but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. [15] You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. (ESV)
- SABBATH REST
- Now as we explore the tool of sabbath, what must be said first is that this commandment has brought about a difference of interpretation pretty much since it was given and there are still different interpretations today as to how Christians are to interact with the sabbath
- So everything I speak to you on today regarding the sabbath is my combination of studying of the word of God, looking at how church history has sought to answer this, and convictions that have been found in my own lived out experience of practicing the sabbath
- Now that the table has been set, to keep this message simple and straight forward the sabbath for the jews and the sabbath for the Christian are not the same thing,
- I believe that the sabbath has not gone away but it remains as a spiritual discipline and a tool available for any and every Christian.
- This is another reason why the fourth commandment is unique.
- All of the other commandments fall only under the moral law, which is designed to reflect the timeless nature of who God is and for that reason the moral law will never cease to exist.
- But the fourth commandment is the only command that falls under both the moral law and the ceremonial law.
- The ceremonial law is a set of laws that were specific to the jews as markers of the old covenant.
- Now as Christ followers, and students of the word there is much to be gained to learn more about these ceremonial laws because they are prophetic in nature displaying spiritual truths that one day would be fulfilled,
- and as Christians, we believe that Christ has fulfilled all of the ceremonial laws through the creative work of redemption that was put on display through His life, death, resurrection and ascension into heaven.
- And this is why there is a lot of confusion within the church about the sabbath and how the Christian is to relate to it.
- So what I am saying to you is that Christ had fulfilled the ceremonial component to the fourth commandment,
- which removes any part of the sabbath that pertains to any specific regulations on how, when, how often or long it is to be practiced. But the moral law component of the sabbath is eternal and will never pass away.
- This is why the sabbath can, and I would strongly advocate that it should still be practiced by the Christian,
- not as a law, but as a spiritual discipline, a tool designed to orient our hearts to find our rest in who God is and what He has done and what He is still doing.
- Before Christ’s work was finished the sabbath was to the jews a joy filled anticipation of the fulfillment of God’s promise and a remembrance of who he is and what he has done.
- After Christ’s work the sabbath turned to being a joyfilled recognition that God’s promises have found their yes and amen in Jesus Christ,
- which for the Christian puts our rest in Christ into this already/not yet category.
- We have total and complete security in Christ and that allows us to rest in Him, but we still need to contend with sin, the chaos and storms of life, and we will not experience rest in its fullness until we are called home to him.
- The result of sin is chaos, chaos is what leads to the storms and turbulence found in life just like the kind of chaos found in Drake’s passage.
- And it is true that Christ has saved us from sin, but yet the storms of life will continue to rage on
- So what I am saying to you is that Christ had fulfilled the ceremonial component to the fourth commandment,
- But it does allow us to be still and know that He is God.
- But so many Christians do not grow in trusting God to fight their battles, to carry them safely through the storm,
- they do not realize that God is allowing life to be hard, not just so they can survive the storm but so he can show up and show off in the storm for the follower of Christ.
- What our enemy plans for evil God will purpose for good for the salvation of many.
- So I believe the sabbath is a resource gifted to the followers of Christ to help us grow in learning how to trust God, to learn how to be still and know that he is God.
- The observance of the sabbath serves as an everpresent reminder in the midst of the storm of who God is and what he has done and also as a joyful hope we have of being eternally united with life itself where everything will be made new,
- and death, sorrow, pain and sickness will be no more.
- The sabbath was made for the Christian in order to find rest in a world that has grown weary of the winds and the waves constantly bearing down on them and threatening their lives.
- The sabbath is not something designed to distract from reality, but rather that in a world that seems like everything is spinning out of control you know that is not because the truth is that all is in the control of our almighty creator and redeemer, who has nothing but love for you in His heart.
- But so many Christians do not grow in trusting God to fight their battles, to carry them safely through the storm,
- This is why I say that the sabbath is always rest, but that rest is not always the sabbath, and the only way to worship our God through rest is to have a sabbath rest in God, in who he is and what he has done and what he is doing.
- Even the good and healthy forms of rest cannot compete with what the resources that are from practicing a sabbath rest, because the good forms of rest that are out there offer no hope outside of your own efforts,
- where a sabbath rest helps to produce a faith that can learn to not just survive the storm but
- rejoice in suffering because suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character and character produces hope and hope does not put us to shame because of the love of God that has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
- The sabbath is all about choosing to trade fear, anxiety, worry, our desire to be in control, our concerns and troubles for an eternal perspective on these temporary storms of life.
- The sabbath is all about learning how to truly live out the freedom you have in Christ, here and now in the midst of a world that is a slave to sin, and the more we learn to do that, the more we can bless others with the opportunity to live in that same freedom.
- rejoice in suffering because suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character and character produces hope and hope does not put us to shame because of the love of God that has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.
- But if that wasn’t enough, by practicing the sabbath rest you are given an opportunity to involve all of the other 9 commandments in this single act of worship.
- Commandments 1-3,
- how we are to interact with God all flow into the practice of the sabbath
- then commandments 5-10,
- how God wants to be worshiped by our interactions with the rest of mankind, will all be able to flow out of the sabbath and not just by being well rested to go back to our work recharged and rejuvenated
- Commandments 1-3,
- but because the sabbath was always intended to be celebrated in community.
- You can see in the command itself how everyone was to celebrate this sabbath together, and when you are celebrating the sabbath as a family, whether it is the family God gave to you through blood or by the spirit
- it provides a venue to teach the next generation of worshipers not just by your words, but by demonstrating it. Showing your children the greatness of your God and how we have a God who made us in His image and wants us to be free to be able to enjoy the many great blessings that he freely gives to us for our enjoyment because he is a good good Father.
- This happens within the growing concentric circles of community starting with husband and wife, then growing to your children, then perhaps your seed group then the corporate gathering of the local church,
- And if you are a single that certainly doesn’t leave you out of community, Jesus was single after all and I would say He did pretty good at celebrating the sabbath
- In my walk with the Lord some of the greatest friendships that the Lord had blessed me with had been as a result of God Holy Spirit building a strong bond with brothers in the faith while in a season of singleness
- If you have one or two people in your life that is a huge blessing
- and quite frankly, as a single person, I can’t tell you how many game nights and times of Christ centered fellowship where the Holy Spirit would move in conversations and produce a greater bond of unity
- the sabbath gives you an opportunity to build greater more meaning filled relationships with the people that you should be the closest with,
- which in turns, is a blessing that helps everyone to enter into the very freedom and the unity that God has promised to us through Jesus Christ by the power of His Holy Spirit.
- In my walk with the Lord some of the greatest friendships that the Lord had blessed me with had been as a result of God Holy Spirit building a strong bond with brothers in the faith while in a season of singleness
- And if you are a single that certainly doesn’t leave you out of community, Jesus was single after all and I would say He did pretty good at celebrating the sabbath
- You can see in the command itself how everyone was to celebrate this sabbath together, and when you are celebrating the sabbath as a family, whether it is the family God gave to you through blood or by the spirit
- The more you practice the sabbath rest the more you will see yourself worshiping your God at work by living out commandments 5-10 to those who are not just your brothers or those who are the people who already love you and hold most of the same values you have,
- but the sabbath will allow for you to be the salt and the light of the world, to be a city of refuge set upon a hill that all can see its light and know this is a safe person, this is a person who doesn’t fly off the handles and loose their temper if I inconvenience them in someway,
- they are someone who I can be vulnerable with and not be taken advantage of, they are someone who is able to remain of sound judgment and level headed even when others around them won’t be.
- When you start to put yourself in a regular rhythm of practicing on the sabbath, these are some of the kinds of transformational fruit that you will be able to display to both those who you love the most and to those who you even just are acquaintances of or just work with.
- All of these really great things come as the result of making regular practice of resting the way God intended,
- But the sabbath is not a magic bullet, this is not works righteousness,
- the sabbath is only as valuable of a resource to the follower of Christ to the degree that involves you drawing near to God
- Giving Holy Spirit room to teach you in how to grow in worshiping God in both Spirit and in truth, the way He desires to be worshiped
- Growing in your Desire, Devotion and Delight of who he is and what he has done
- and directing your worship to Him.
- If you want to feel your faith come alive, if you want the reality of the promises of God to be more real to you then whatever chaos you are facing in life, if you want to live in the victory and freedom that God has promised you through faith in Jesus Christ and see the fruit of sanctification explode in your life, To put it simply I don’t know of another way to worship God through your rest other than by making a regular practice of the sabbath
- Jesus declared himself to be Lord of the sabbath in Matthew chapter 12, the Lord of rest invites us to come to him, all who are weary and heavy laden and he will give rest.
- For a follower of Christ to not practice the sabbath, doesn’t mean your not saved but if we were to continue with the drakes passage illustration,
- it would be like you were on a row boat that was tied to the ark of Jesus Christ, you are saved, He will not let that rope break or fail, He is not letting go of you for nothing,
- but your going to get beat up by the winds and the waves that come from life, until you can learn to how to make Him the source of all your comfort.
- HOW TO SABBATH
- So where do you start? If you are resonating with anything that I am speaking to you on then you might find yourself wondering where can you get started with all of this?
- The bible is clear, particularly in romans 14 and colossians 2, on how and when you worship God through your rest does come down to a matter of your conviction.
- But if you find yourself wanting to learn more and putting your faith into action by resting in the Lord through a sabbath rest
- I have found through scripture 7 different principles that I have found helpful for me and I believe will also give you a good place to start thinking through your own conviction on this topic of sabbath
First principle is simple, choose a day,
- work six days rest one. Choose a day that will work for you and your family, and this can change as needed from week to week but the idea is intentionality. Set that day to be a day set apart for the Lord to seek Him out on and to be filled with rest, community and give room for good works to flow out of an expression of your gratitude towards Him.
- It may be the day when we have church or it might not be, choose the day that you have the greatest potential to free your schedule from any obligations, dr appointments, etc.
- If you are finding this hard or impossible even, that could mean that the business of life could have crept up on you to the point of taking everything over.
- A good principle with in a principle is how ever someone spends their time, talents or treasures is a good indicator of where their heart is
Second is to prepare.
- In Exodus 16, when Israel was collecting the bread God gave to them from heaven on the sixth day they were to take twice as much bread to prepare for the sabbath celebration so they didn’t need to spend any of their time going out to collect the bread.
- For the day you choose to do your sabbath work with the intentionality to prepare your home, try to get the cooking and cleaning done beforehand so it can free your mind to just paying attention to what this time was all meant to be about. After the first couple of times you will quickly be able to recognize areas you can do this better.
Third is to set a boundary,
- protect this day and don’t let it be interrupted by things that are not life or death situations. Exodus 34:31 The sabbath was to be done in times of harvest and in times of plowing.
- You may not be a farmer but essentially what this means is it doesn’t matter what work deadline is approaching, the only thing that would be able to cross that boundary into the sabbath would be a matter of life and death and always leaving room for people.
- If this is something you might struggle with, give your phone to your spouse for the day and let them decide if something is life or death for you. Or just turn it off!
Fourth is having time to reflect,
- For some of you this will feel a bit more natural than others. This is a muscle that is a healthy thing to grow, but by no means does this principle imply being in a contemplative stoic state all day long pondering the mysteries of life,
- but rather built into the very commandment something we have been looking at in this message and the one beforehand was the very reason that we are to sabbath is because of who God is and what he has done, and it is by reflecting and thinking about those things that will help fill our hearts with awe and gratitude with the power and the love that He has caused on our behalf.
- But reflection also can look inward to see how you have been doing with living out the gospel in your life where you can rejoice in times of victory and confess your shortcomings and receive forgiveness and rejoice because there is no sin too big for the cross of Christ.
Fifth is community,
- Again you see this in the commandment itself of how this was meant to be done in groups of people and not only just family, but inviting others in to help share in the sabbath rest in the Lord is a principle found in the fourth command itself.
- Community is such an important part of the sabbath rest, because it is the most direct path to being able to reflect the love of God to others. To be in community means to have opportunities to do good, to help and invite people in, and to serve as Christ, the Lord of the sabbath, directly modeled for us in the gospels accounts of the sabbath.
- 7 different times in the gospels there were non overlapping sabbath accounts depicted, and in each one of them we see Jesus placing an emphasis that the sabbath is about helping people to be set free from the chaos and bondage of this life and helping them to find where their ultimate source of security and significance can come from.
- This principle can and certainly should be done in your family, but there is no reason that your service needs to stop there, serve your seed group, invite a family over for dinner, or bring food over to another house and see what God is doing in their lives,
- ask the Lord how you can be an encouragement to those who need encouragement in their lives, you will be amazed when you see how quickly he will answer that prayer by bringing someone to mind
And the sixth principle is to have fun!
- Isaiah 58 says if you worship God the way outlined in these principles on the sabbath and not selfishly seek your own pleasure but seek to have your life bring Him pleasure he literally says “then you shall take delight in the Lord, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth”.
- Parents, how much joy does it give you to see your children be so grateful for a gift that you had given to them and see that joy light up their faces and them knowing it was something you gave out of the love you have for them. Why would it be less with your heavenly Father, acknowledging and enjoying the good gifts that your heavenly Father has given you will help bring those activities that are in the category of a healthy way to spend your time of leisure into a great way to enjoy the sabbath rest.
- Even under the ceremonial law the sabbath was listed first as the top one feast they were to celebrate every week, the heart God had behind the sabbath was to breathe a breath of life into the observer in only the way that your creator can through a time of joyous celebration.
- Bring God into your hobbies and the healthy ways that you already enjoy rest, God is not just the God of comfort where we can be restored, He is the God of all Joy as well and through Him you will have more fun in things of leisure than you ever had before
The seventh and final principle beloved is to remember to show grace to yourself.
- There is nothing in our culture that has instilled this idea of sabbath in you, seek to honor the Lord in this practice it is my encouragement to you, but this is no law that I am speaking to you, it is a resource,
- if you want to see a greater evidence of the transformational power of the gospel, learn how to sabbath,
- If you are tired of saying that you have victory through Christ but often don’t feel victorious over this life then I would suggest learning to implement these principles to the best of what you can and learn how to worship the Lord through your rest.
- God promises that if we abide in him, the true vine, we will bear the fruit of Christ in our life, and the sabbath is all about abiding in the true vine and worshiping Him in Spirit and in truth
The how and when and how long you do a sabbath for whether it is an hour or a day, is no requirement God has placed on you, beloved bride of Christ for your salvation, you have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus, and far be it from me to put any requirement on you.
Today I was hoping to highlight the benefits that my family and I have received from making it an essential part of our worship to the Lord over these past six months, and we have not done it perfectly by any means but we have witnessed time and time again God meeting us where we are at while we were learning slowly how to “be still and know that he is God” by worshiping Him in our rest,
God has shown up and shown off mightily in the last 6 months for me and my family since starting this discipline, all to His glory, and that is my very desire for you all to witness as well in your own lives to an even greater extent then He already has allowed you to witness.
CONCLUSION
- It starts with relationship not religiosity.
- Think about the most meaningful relationships you have, the more time and effort you put into that relationship the more deep of a connection you have formed.
- God is no different in that regard, except for the fact he already knows you, more than you even know yourself actually, but He wants you to know Him better, and to know God is to know more about His love that he has for you,
- and in response to His unconditional love that was most clearly seen through His Son Jesus
- Greater love has no one known than this then to lay down your life for your friends. He laid down His life so you can have life. When you enter into that life you will find yourself growing more in love with Him for both who he is and what he has done.
- And you will not have to wonder about the cost of devoting a whole day to worship the Lord, because it will be one of your greatest sources of delight.
- Every time the follower of Christ makes the intentional choice to choose to spend their leisure time pursuing a deeper relationship with Christ I believe they are pursuing a sabbath rest.
- To the one who asks, receives, to the one who seeks, finds, and to the one who knocks it is opened to you.
- If you approach your time with the Lord with a right heart asking seeking and knocking to know more about this divine lover of your soul He will answer that prayer every single time.
- Every time the follower of Christ makes the intentional choice to choose to spend their leisure time pursuing a deeper relationship with Christ I believe they are pursuing a sabbath rest.
- If you have already surrendered your life to Christ, you have been washed clean, but you spend a whole lot of time walking and working in the dirt, the sabbath is a time to let Jesus wash your feet, to send you out to carry His good news to those who need it most.
ILLUSTRATION WRAP UP
- Remember the sabbath is always rest but rest is not always the sabbath, rest is a human need and there are good ways and bad ways to find your rest but none of those ways will produce such joy, peace and gratitude and life and hope in the believer as the sabbath will.
- Worshipping God through the sabbath is an opportunity to lay your life at God’s feet and say Lord I am all yours and see the life that he will produce in the one of who has surrendered their own life to Him.
Before we go, I just wanted to bring our minds back to drakes passage for a second, where the atlantic and the pacific ocean meet and how that resembles the fourth commandment that brings about life not in spite of the chaos but because of the chaos.
Work six days and have a sabbath rest on one, it isn’t an obligation tied to your salvation, it is an opportunity to find the promises of God working their way into your life and allow your life to not only find a way but to flourish in the midst of the world storms.
But did you know there is one more ocean involved in Drake’s passage?
It is the Antarctic ocean, which is extremely unique in itself. It is the only ocean that circumnavigates the whole world, it has the strongest current by far of any other ocean, and it is connected to every other ocean. And what the antarctic ocean does is truly amazing,
It takes the rich nutrient rich water that was mixed as a result of all of the storms and rough seas in drakes passage, and it distributes those life giving nutrients to the rest of the oceans of the world allowing all life to benefit from the chaos.
That is how the kingdom of God works Church, what the enemy plans for evil God has purposed for good for the salvation of many. Fatigue makes cowards of us all, where do you go to find your comfort?
The fourth commandment was in between those two oceans. One that resembles how we are to interact and worship God the way He wants to be worshiped, and the other ocean is how we are to worship God through how we interact with people. The storms of life are what allows the mixing of these two oceans and produces the means for life to flourish not in spite of the trials and tribulations we are bound to face, but because of them.
Then God takes the blessings of life that He works out through our lives and increases its impact to an amount that God only knows how far it will reach.
Be still and know that He is Lord beloved. Let us go from here, and celebrate the freedom we have to rest in Christ Jesus. Beloved, turn to him for your rest by the power of the Spirit, to the glory of the Father.
